Dear Javi,

First, let me say that I think you’re absolutely GREAT and that Lost is the best show on TV by far!* I have this burning question on my mind so I was hoping that you could offer some insight.* I was just wondering if you could tell us if you knew that Boone was the one who would die first since the very beginning.* It almost seems as if he was specifically developed to a character that a lot of people wouldn’t care about because you knew that he would meet an early demise. A lot of people saw him as incompetent due to his “lacking the ability to do anything right” and were further turned off by the moral issues surrounding his relationship with Shannon.* *Was he intended to be a character that was not widely-liked so people wouldn’t be too attached to him when he ended up dying?*

After reading the forums, it seems that a lot of people were disappointed that Boone was the one to die because they saw it as “obvious” for the reasons mentioned above. I’ve read several posts where people have said “who cares, it was just Boone.”* *I think that people were just expecting it to be a little less…predictable—as is the usual style of Lost. So that is why I’m wondering if he was a character who was slated for death since the beginning.*

Please don’t get me wrong, I loved “Do no Harm!”* The script and acting was phenomenal!* It was very emotional and we saw a lot of character development.* I must applaud you and the rest of team for the only television show that has ever been able to make me cry for a character.* I’m sure that you have some mind-blowing episodes lined up for us in the future and I’m definitely looking forward to them!* I also want to thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to come to this forum and interact with the fans—we all really appreciate it!

Sincerely,
Christina (WildKat)

P.S. I just thought of another question for you. :) Is there any correlation between Boone's episode "Hearts and Minds" being episode 1x13 and the fact that he was the one who died? It seems like it was kind of a hint that he would be the "unlucky" one. It's probably just a coincidence, but I thought I'd ask.

first of all, thanks for all of your kind words - much appreciated.

boone came to his sad demise because the story demanded it - it was not predestined from the beginning (like a lot of things we do), but as his story developed in conjunction with locke, his death became a necessary thing to move the action and conflict ahead - once thhat decision was made, we tailored all of the episodes with boone in them toward that inevitable conclusion.

and there is noever such a thing to us writers as "oh it's just boone" - we created the character, we loved the actor, he did an amazing job and we were sad that we had to go there, but like i said, it's something the story of lost demanded from us!

as far as predictable, what can i tell you, this is the story we are telling. we felt that killing boone the way we dod was a good departure from the the tv tradition of "last minute saves" - we wanted it to be about the emotion, not the thrills. but ya know, ya can;t please everyone - we just have to do it as we best know how!

best,

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions!* *I'm know you have a tough job trying to please everyone and it will probably never happen.* *It makes more sense that you were trying to make his death more about the emotion (and very emotional it was!), rather than thrills.* I guess people were just surprised that they were not surprised* :)* It's good to hear that Boone's fate wasn't sealed from the beginning as many people have speculated, but it's also good that it wasn't a last minute decision.* I am sad to see him go, but I'm sure his death will serve a greater purpose--and I think we will find out very soon what it is!* I can't wait to see what you have in store for us!

P.S. I didn't mean that the writers thought "it's just Boone."* That's just what some of the fans were saying. I'm sure the writers love all of the characters equally.* You molded them, after all!*

Thanks again!!!!
Christina
