I was going to ask the same thing, they seemed to make a bit of a deal about that, showing a close up of the box going into the bag just as Jack walked in.

LOL when I first saw the subject line I thought it was about Ben's Magic Box, and at that point, I heard Ben sigh and say "No, John..it's not the magic box."

It looked the same size as the box he dug out of the grass up on top of the mountain on the island, but I can't remember what was in that??

Very old Saltines, binoculars and a mirror...and yes, the buried box was the first thing I thought of when I say the air vent box.

There was definite emphasis on the importance of that box. He was very careful with it. If it were just money and passports, it'd be a pretty big let down.

Yeah, if it were just passports and money I don't think that Ben would have taken such care with it and would not have had to hide it in the air vent.

It looked more to me like he had wrapped the box in a flannel shirt or piece of fabric, not necessarily that the box itself was made of it.

Also, it seemed to me like Ben was going to great lengths to make sure Jack didn't catch on to its existence. Yeah, Jack walked in when he was putting it in his bag, but to Jack it must have just looked like he was packing. And if Ben had made a bigger deal out of hiding it, Jack would've asked about it. All in all, I think Ben is hiding something (what else is new?).

When Miles 'exorcised' the dead boy from his room in his grandmothers house, in (I think "Confirmed Dead") didn't he open a vent to find what he was looking for?


I'm not saying it has anything to do with what Ben was doing, but it's something to look at.

Maybe it's all the items Richard Alpert carried in his satchel when he visited a young John Locke and Ben carries it in the box now.

However, I think it pertains more to getting back to the Island...I mean that's what his purpose is all about now.

My guess after looking at the size of it again: the Book of Law

These two episodes mentioned the rules several times. Ben and Hawking are trying to figure out how to get back to the island. Maybe this book has all this information.

It'd also be interesting if it were the book, that we also saw the compass and the knife this episode -- all things Richard showed John as a kid.

Not literally. But figuratively, maybe.

That box has been bugging me since Wed. night. I think it is an ancient Island artifact...something needed to stop the Island from skipping through time so the O6 can return to where the other Losties are in time.

After reading the other ideas, I thought, "It can't be the Book of Laws" because Ben didn't have anything with him except his baton. However, then I remember that Richard had it off the Island when he visited Locke as a boy so my guess is it's the book because of the care Ben treated it with.

Another question about this is Why is it in the vent and Who put it there? Did Ben put it there, or was it waiting on them to get that room?

Maybe it has a couple of wooden dolls in it and he doesn't want Jack to know he still plays with dolls? ;)

lol....I love Oreos with double stuff but stopped eating them years ago......only eat homemade cookies now. (Well...I'll eat a girl scout cookie or two once a year. :smile:)

As many have already said, it has to be something that existed off-Island since Ben didn't take anything with him in his parka besides his weapon when he turned the Frozen Donkey Wheel. Whatever is in that box is critical to the overall plan, however, since Ben's comment to Jack just after packing it was something along the lines of "Pack a bag and fill it with ... since you're never coming back."

My guess is the latter, mise. I think he just wanted it out of sight while he went to get Jack.

I think it would be premature to say it's not anything from the island. Remember Locke still has to leave the island at some point before his death and it's possible he brings something with him that will be vital to his reanimation (if this is in fact what is going to happen) or to the survival of the island. Thinking back to the obituary clipping Jack had in the S3 finale, the clip said something like 'Jeremy Bentham was found hanging in his loft in New York'. So it sounds like Locke doesn't die on the island. And even if he did die on the island, someone would have to have left the Island with Locke's dead body and then placed it in a manner that would suggest suicide. ( "They said it was suicide." -Sayid to Hurley on Bentham's death; S4 finale )

So, my guess as to the contents of the box is... Locke's Backgammon Set.
