View Full Version : Will someone please buy Oxford some dry-erase boards?
Neonpolarbear 01-22-2009, 05:10 PM It bugged me when the Daniel was writing with chalk (when Desmond was visiting him) , now mommy dearest ( assuming it was oxford)
Seriously, WHO uses chalk anymore?

It makes the equations look cool!
But in reality, most theoretical physicists do prefer chalk. You'd be hard-pressed to find a dry-erase board in the physics buildings of Harvard, Caltech, Cambridge, Oxford, etc...

Really? wow... I had no idea. :)
MaxTennessee 01-22-2009, 05:46 PM 1. I don't think she's at Oxford, it almost looks like a church
2. How can you be so sure she's Daniel's mum? Don't even have the same accent...
GettinLost 01-23-2009, 02:07 AM I agree - that dusty, dry feel of chalk on the hands and the "screech, screech, screech" of chalk on the chalkboard!!! And once you start writing with it it's never sharp again... EEEEEEEKKKK!:shiver:
There's nothing like the buzz of good dry erase fumes...:teehee:
RodimusBen 01-23-2009, 03:39 AM "Real physicists use chalk..." future bumper sticker slogan?

I always used that kid's sidewalk chalk when I wanted to unfold an idea for my students. It came in different colors, although I only used a few of them. My college students thought it was really cool.
Drawing with chalk and making diagrams on an old fashion chalkboard beats powerpoint any day. (Notice I didn't capitalize it.)
Of course, I got written up on my evaluations for not using "technology" but my students' evaluations of me were always positive.
Dont let "the man" tell you what you can't do. Go chalk!
Nevermore 01-23-2009, 05:31 AM I doubt Ben could get from LA to Oxford that fast... And all the candles don't exactly look like something you'd find at Oxford University either.

In my experiences, most everybody dealing with complex mathematical equations use the transparent dry-erase boards that can be written on both sides of at colleges, examples being Dartmouth and Cornell.
Pythagoras99 01-23-2009, 11:14 AM Forget the chalk... what was that computer she was using? An Apple II? Considering that she's apparently working for a global organization with unlimited resources, I could probably hook her up with some modern hardware -- and maybe even a color monitor!

Maybe the old Dharma computers were special. :D
