Widmore tells Ben he's kept a bottle of scotch beside the bed since the nightmares began?
i wonder if its the same "nightmare" things Desmond got with his memory while the Losties bounce about in time

Interesting idea. Though I hate to think that Widmore has any sort of super power.

I think the nightmares thing is not a superpower, it's just a narrative device the writers are using to explain away the fact that Desmond didn't recognize Faraday when he first saw him at the beach.
He only remembers when it suits the writers that he would

More just a connection to the Island than a super power.
So he can't change anything, but when people who are time jumping interact with him, he has vivid recall of it. We may have seen one already,
(it just theory but I'll spoiler font just in case)
I was thinking that "Jones" was a misdirection and maybe we'll find out that
It's a young Widmore wearing someone elses jumpsuit.

I assumed from the Ben/Widmore meeting Widmore has been to the island and since the island can reach out to people and send them visions and the like the nightmares were the island's way of punishing Widmore for causing so much death on the island from Keamy and the mercenaries. Or any actions he committed in the past(or given the island's time hopping would that be the present?) we have yet to see.

Hahaha i don't think it's to suit the writers entirely, it's to avoid paradox.
What's the one way to write a TT story and avoid all paradox caused by character interaction? Memory loss, you can't learn something in the past and then use it to effect the time up until your present, you forget the information until it becomes harmless.
Desmond is the exception of course, he can experience his past instantaneously, as soon as something happens in his past that is different, he will experience it.
I hope for Desmonds sake that changing something in the past doesn't change too much for him, like if something changed in the past and caused a disaster, like a nuclear explosion, he would have to re-experience everything that had changed from that event, i would hate to see the poor fella constantly flashing back to experience his past. I can imagine it would drive you insane.

Not necessarily--from what I remember "Jones" wasn't killed by Locke, he just got tied up by Sawyer with Juliet holding a gun to his head.

Jones was the only soldier who wasn't killed by Locke.

Maybe Christian Shephard started drinking because of the nightmares too...?
