Watch "Flashes Before Your Eyes" from 3rd season. I just did. It makes sense now!

She was the lady Desmond met in that jewelry store that wouldn't sell him the engagement ring. She walked around with him telling him things about his future and that pushing the button in the Swan would be the greatest thing he would ever do.

She was the lady in the store where Desmond went to buy a ring for Penny. She predicts Desmonds future and tells him that he will not marry Penny he should instead go to the island. She points out a particular person on the street just before that person is killed in a freak accident. Desmonds realizes she knew that would happen before it did, and he asked why she didn't save him. She explains how the universe has a way of course correcting itself and the man would have just died another way the next day if she intervened. Just like Desmond explained to Charlie about not being able to save him while they were on the island.

Another important thing was that she said if he didn't push the button for 3 years and turn the fail safe key that,
"every single of us is dead."

which was later confirmed by TPTB to be everyone in the world, not just Island related peeps....I'm thinking (as are many) that she's Danny's mum.

She also appeared in a photo on the desk of the Head Monk (Brother Campbell maybe)
that fired Desmond and who regularly sold cases of wine to Charles Widmore.
