View Full Version : Could this be our statue?
amslostfan 04-05-2009, 03:58 AM Hey all, i was reading Dylan_1200's thread and in that thread Pulse (Hey) has an excellent theory, go check it out. So I decided to look into a God mentioned in Pulses tale and the god was Amun ra or re. This god was highly associated with fertility and had symbols representing him such as the sun. Anyway i found this image of Amun re and thought this looks a lot like our statue, mainly because of the ankh in the hand and the flat headdress with small ears. Im sure theres better images out there but for now heres the link http://www.thelibyanperiod.leidenuniv.nl/content_images/amun-re.jpg I think when we get to see the statue it's going to be our Richard Alpert in this form.
Also just to add a little bit, within the temple when souls were judged there was a creature Ammit 'Devourer or, more accurately, and less euphemistically (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphemism), Bone Eater, and her titles such as Devourer of the dead, Devourer of millions (Am-heh in Egyptian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_language)), Eater of hearts, and Greatness of Death.' She would judge souls that were good or bad, bad souls would be immediately killed. Errrm smokey???
Thoughts?
keyser 04-05-2009, 05:40 AM very interesting stuff, the staue does seem similar. However I am going to go with Taweret
In most subsequent depictions, Taweret was depicted with features of a pregnant woman. In a composite addition to the animal-compound she was also seen with pendulous breasts, a full pregnant abdomen, and long, straight human hair on her head.
As a protector, she often was shown with one arm resting on the sa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sa_%28hieroglyph%29) symbol, which symbolized protection, and on occasion she carried an ankh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankh), the symbol of life, or a knife, which would be used to threaten evil spirits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritual_being).
Source- Wikipedia
I think it would help tie in with why babies cannot be born on the island, also the statue faced toward the ocean right? Sort of like a lighthouse keeping evil spirits off the island.
Also Taweret has the infamous four toes

stevenbecki 04-05-2009, 09:19 AM Great theory....my other interest in the statue is what happened to it, why was just the one foot left in 2007?
deeannek 04-05-2009, 09:29 AM Very interesting. Why does this make me think of Juliet?
Tommy 04-05-2009, 10:27 AM Ben keeps wasting our time with fertility issues
We see that shot of the statue from what we think is to be the past, Ben(who had a complicated birth) brings in Juliet to help with the baby problem, yet, at some point Richard seems to think its useless.....and hes the one(along with born on the island Ethan) that recruited her. Whats the point of a that fertility statue if someone as high up as Richard thinks its useless. and when did he start thinking its useless and why?
Claire, Danielle, & Amy have all had a kid, Sun conceived on the island.... did that statue look after them....and not however many that died?
Pulse 04-05-2009, 10:30 AM Heya, I like the thoughts on the statue...just to let you know I posted the story on the shipwrecked sailor under general theories section since it borders on being in this section...heres the link

More insight into the myth, In the original papyrus version of the myth, the snake tells the sailor that he has been shipwrecked on the “Island of Ka.”
The “Ka” is the life force of a person born at the same time as the physical body but surviving physical death as a spiritual entity. One Egyptologist has suggested that “phantom island” might be a possible rendering. However, since the “Ka” is a magical power, capable of bringing to reality inanimate representations of, for example, bread, beer jugs, incense, linen clothing, and animals, then “the Enchanted Island” is probably the snake’s meaning.
RoyBatty 04-05-2009, 10:30 AM Also Taweret has the infamous four toes

The way the statue has been teased, it almost has to be someone from the island. We've been setup for the big frontal reveal. And it being Tarawet or Bast or similar isn't going to make the normal viewing audience have an OMG! moment. Us "super fans" that pick over every little detail would be pleased, but I just don't buy it being that great of a reveal in regards to general consumption, if you will.
Also, the statue having four toes isn't really that much of a clue for two reasons:
- Almost all the egyptian animal headed figures had four toes
- In the May 9, 2008 pod cast Sculpter Jim Van Houten says
"Originaly this was a six toed foot, but it just looked like a foot with a bunch of toes, you couldn't tell that it had too many, so then we pulled it down to a four toed foot."
onedurbred 04-05-2009, 11:30 AM Do you think the statue has something to do with the ‘incident’? We know it’s destroyed sometime on the island. I’m hoping we get to see it destroyed or at least see it from the front.
deeannek 04-05-2009, 11:47 AM I wonder if the statue might have broken during the time jumps. When Locke fixed the wheel and after the last flash, I think Miles said it felt like an "earthquake" I wonder if that could have damaged the statue. Or maybe it was just erosion since we don't know who built it or how long ago.
ikonn 04-05-2009, 12:47 PM is it possible that they destroyed the statue to use as concrete to bury the Jughead?
nanwynnfan 04-05-2009, 01:12 PM Very interesting. Why does this make me think of Juliet?
What the heck: Me too! I am all in, betting on Juliet being both the Statue and the Island's symbol of Gaia: fertility, Island ecology in balance, control of forces threatening Island well-being.
If I'm wrong, it won't be the first time. My favorite characters to date are/have been: Locke, Matthew Abaddon, Rousseau, Charlotte, Ecko, Richard Alpert, Charlie, Naomi [had hopes for her], Ben, Ms. Hawking Widmore and Daniel.
So far, selling life insurance policies of any size to my top pix would be a losing proposition; but I'm sticking with Juliet as a very key player.
amslostfan 04-05-2009, 05:50 PM Thanks for the input guys and im glad somones listening to my theories lol. I would be v disappointed if the statue is related to Juliet, I don't think she seems special enough when compared to Alpert and Locke. Also if Alpert isn't the representation of RA, then where on earth is he from? We know he's ancient but how old? I personally don't think we'll get a definate answer to this till the end of season 6. For spoiler fans the following backs up my theory:
On the DarkUFO site, it has details of filming within the temple. The main features were a large fire in the middle of the floor and various egyptian tapestries including one of RA praying to the sun. This tapestry symbolises RA praying to the sun to heal (ie. to heal Ben)
Arjuous 04-05-2009, 06:19 PM I don't think that ANYONE we know is going to be on the face of the statue. If it were Locke's face, for instance, then Ben would have never been able to say "He's not who we thought he was" to the Others before he got Sawyer to kill his father. This assumes, of course, that the Others know whose face is on the statue, but still. Similarly, I don't think it's Richard because we've seen, in the last episode, his rank questioned by his peers. So either everyone is in the dark about the statue but RIchard (in which case the statue likely is, in fact, either of Richard or Locke), or (what I think) they all know about the statue and the face is somebody we haven't seen yet.
nanwynnfan 04-05-2009, 06:59 PM My point is that IF we ever behold the face of the four-toed statue, my money is on Juliet.
Any of the images of the great Sphinx at Giza that I've seen bear a general but immediate resemblance to stoic Juliet, the quiet reserve, the becalmed mere hint of smile. Then we have the link to medicine and fertility. The general demeanor of Juliet evokes within me the instant thought, "She abides."
Giza also gives us four prominent toes.
SpoonFork 04-06-2009, 04:17 AM It's the hostiles that can't have babies. The Dharma Initiative is just fine. They figured if Juliette could make a male mouse pregnant, surely she could do it on whatever the heck the hostiles are/came to be.
Chrysander 04-06-2009, 04:22 AM The reason we were shown the statue from the back was because it was built right next to the water, facing outwards. So there isn't a way to show it from the front, unless our characters were in the water. At least that's my understanding. That pregnant statue looks most likely to me. If it turns out to be a character from the show... meh. That will be like eating a statue made of cheese.
Does anyone else get the creeps from that statue? It's just so strange, I love it
SpoonFork 04-06-2009, 04:26 AM I think if they showed it from the front it would be too obvious a piece in the puzzle. I know people figured it out but it's presented that way to retain some mystery. Showing it from behind I think was intentional.
Chrysander 04-06-2009, 04:28 AM How could they show it from the front though? It would be a long shot from the water, and wouldn't be information that the characters would have, so it wouldn't make sense to do that
EDIT: I guess it is possible that they could have written in more time for the characters to investigate, walk to the statue and view it from the front, but again I don't know if it would make sense that the characters would do that, walk towards that thing, it's pretty threatening-looking, and who knows what else / who else they'd find there to egyptianize them to death
SpoonFork 04-06-2009, 04:32 AM I'm sure if they wanted to show it from the front, they could have thought of a way, but since it was facing outwards it just worked out perfectly.
Chrysander 04-06-2009, 04:34 AM Ah I see what you mean, even if the statue was elsewhere, you think they'd still have shown it from behind? Yeah I think that's possible
