Parting Words (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNdPK7R26QY&feature=related) is the tune that was played during the raft launch in episode 1x23 - Exodus (Part 1) (http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Exodus%2C_Part_1). It is just an awsome, awsome piece by Giacchino. Very iconic to the show and it always takes me right back to that scene. Full of hope and resolve with a hint of the sadness of parting. Love that tune!
Anyway, it doesn't seem to get used very often in the show. I think there may have been only one other occasion it has been used other than the raft scene. And I find it very interesting that that melody should be played during Kate's "bye bye baby" scene with Aaron.
Kate's usual theme:

I don't think Kate was running away from her problems. I think this was really her true redemption scene, and the use of that special piece of music was intended to really mark the occasion. It began at 38:05 or so right after Kate tells Carole, "I'm going back to find your daughter".
Yeah, yeah. I know what some of you will say. "Duh! Parting Words... She's leaving him". But watch the scene again. It's not the usual somber, lost and confused, crying music. It is hopeful music. It doesn't quite fit the crying scene. At least, it doesn't convey despair. I think it's meant to signify something else.
Kate is no longer lost.
