The scene where Hurley witnesses the numbers being chiseled into the side of the hatch was amazing. I can't wait for more insight into their mystery!

I also loved that scene. Poor Hurley was just stunned.

I hope they show a lot more about the swan and it's many secrets too. If they don't I'm going to be quite disappointed. :frown:

I have a feeling the Swan is going to play a BIG role in the rest of the season...

Having Hurley be present for the hammering of the numbers into the Hatch door was absolutely epic.

Brilliant, brilliant stuff right there.

Although it doesnt really make sense that it would be a "serial number", since it is the Valenzetti equation that the DI were studying on the island.

It still has never been mentioned on the show, and so far (and this could change in the very next episode, but so far) the numbers, are still just a coincidence. The Broadcast, the fair, the loto, the soccer team, the, hatch, the computer, the speedometer, and now the hatch again. so far all coincidence. I do think that there is more to them than that. By the simple fact that they are both the code to the swan, and they are the broadcast. However, the guy asks Glen for the SERIAL number, which would imply randomness (sequentiality actually). but again I feel this implies coincidence.... so far

Weren't the numbers engraved into the side of the hatch SHAFT, rather than the hatch door?

Also, why would they be working on the hatch door when the whole construction site was still a huge crater?

If I were reading someone a "serial number" of 4815162342, I would probably say "481" "516" "2342" or even "4815" "1623" and "42" instead of "4" "8" "15" ...

That wouldn't be LOST though...

Me thinks, all the number stuff from seat numbers to radio alarm clocks and microwaves are just a reference to the concept of selective perception. We, the audience, are exposed to this concept since the beginning. :)

Don't forget about the scrap of paper recovered from Rousseau in S1, it was the first time the numbers had been involved without driving him crazy. I really hope Hurley can come to terms with the numbers and use his previous experiences to provide life saving information. Due to the way he was exposed to their "power" only he will be able to comprehend their magnitude. Hurley FTW!

Don't forget the row of police cars (numbers on top) in the Ana Lucia episode.....

Why put a serial number on a hatch door on the island ?

It's not as if the company will need to trace it.

wasn't the Valenzetti equation mentioned somewhere on the blastdoor map, or am I mixing up my memory?

The number are not a serial number.
The worker asked for "the serial" number, cause he thinks that's what it is.
He's just a worker, he doesn't know details. Numbers on a cover are a serial number as far as he is concerned.

Emspace, they were specifically divided that way on the door, with spaces. He read them right.

I think you're probably right, in that the worker had very little knowledge about the history that surrounds those numbers. It is very likely, that the workers were not privy to anything but what was on the structural drawings. The serial number is significant, which means it is not a random event.

I really would like to see Hurley play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the numbers. Maybe he is the one who is responsible for them being "cursed" .

If the number was so significant, why entrust the task to a pair of bozos, using a badly smudged scrap of paper, with no supervision?

Part of the back story given to Hurley to convince him if their provenance/mystical nature was the story of Toomey correctly guessing the beans in a "jar the size of a pony"; so 4.8 billion beans and change. Which is about 2400 tonnes of beans. One big pony...... The meaning, origin of the numbers isn't of any significance. They might refer to a drawing number, so alternative location indicator (instead of the stupid naming convention). The fact that Dharma workers were hammering out this number with a well worn set of dies not only suggests they had been hammering other numbers elsewhere, but that this was also routine. What if Glenn had misread 42 for 47 or 92? End of the world stuff?

I would say that the construction was entrusted to those who could carry out the task. The workers did exactly what they were supposed to do and, once ready for inspection, they will have their mistakes pointed out to them (if any are present).

Yes, the act of hammering numbers into specific objects would no doubt be quite common in the early stages of development, given there are multiple stations being constructed simultaneously. However, I do think that Hurley will discover their origin or at least their purpose, and it will ultimately lead to his intimate connection with them.

The numbers alone to any random person may not have significance, but the fact that Hurley has had such a remarkable journey, (a direct result of him coming into contact with these specific numbers) seems to indicate that they do indeed carry some significance, at least for him.

What if Glenn had misread 42 for 47 or 92? End of the world stuff?

I would like to assume that Hurley would have jumped out of the Van and grabbed the paper from his hands. "Ah-ha! I knew it, it's 42 dude." Or maybe if the number was different it would prove to him that things can be changed. However, since the numbers remained the same it would seem as though they carry significant value.

Ah, you live in hope. Where did Hurley get the numbers from? Someone in an insane asylum, who claimed he heard the numbers while working in the Navy with a pal, Toomey. No actual proof (why wasn't Len in a VA hospital?). So Hurley wins a rigged lottery (easy to do for the people involved). A few coincidental or non so coincidental misfortunes later, he travels to Australia. Toomey's widow strings him a complete lie (if you stop and do the maths). We've no rewal evidence tha Toomey or Len actually did hear this broadcast, or were really in the Navy. I don't know what the motivation was, yet, but I don't believe Hurley came into contact with these numbers through mysstical reasons, nor that they actually do feature in his life. The appearance of the numbers in the show was just a device by the writers to get us to watch it, while they made up the script. Later on they figured out they wouldn't have enough time to explain these numbers (a season or two shorter than they expected, and hopefully no spin off movie). They've still got to explain to us Richard, without us falling about laughing. Right now though, I'm getting worried that its descending into a X-men/Heroes rip-off, with all the youngsters having "superpowers".
