Yes or No

Eloise said Dharma built it to find the island. How could Daniel have built it if he went back in time to when Dharma was already there?

This. It's a nice idea, but just doesn't quite fit.

I wouldn't be surprised if Daniel was the one who found the Island for the Dharma Initiative in the first place. But this would require more time travel. Still, wouldn't be surprised at all.

While I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way... the timing doesn't match up... nor does the fact that the sub is coming from Michigan while the Lampost seems to be in L.A.... although if DHARMA is based in Ann Arbor, why do they have a station in L.A.? I dunno, seems kinda... convenient? Unless I missed something... but eh... I've accepted weirder for no good reason why should any of us start complaining now?

I voted yes! Daniel was the guy who developed the pendulum that predicted where the Island would be. He could have done it vis a vis Time Travel.

Why would he bother to do such things, if he 'knows'it gonna happen anyway. As he said, you cant change things already happened. He can just sit and relax, pop a beer and enjoy and it happens anyway.

I'm thinking that whoever Daniel's father is built it. That would explain Ellie's apparent admiration when talking about the "very clever person." (And no, I don't think it's Widmore. I think Charles and Ellie had much more of a brother/sister vibe.)

Some interesting speculation. I vote no on Daniel building it, though.

I'm not sure that the builder is one of the things the writers will feel the need to clarify. But I do think we will get a lot more about the DI in the coming eppy's this year or next. So maybe it will be a part of that backstory.

From "316":

MS. HAWKING: The Dharma Initiative called it the Lamppost. [pauses] This is how they found the island
MS. HAWKING: Yes! The island. They'd gathered proof that it existed. They knew it was out there somewhere. They just couldn't find it.

Daniel was off of the Island between 1974 and 1977. Dharma had been on the Island since 1970. To me that would mean that the Lamppost had been built prior to 1970 for Dharma to use it to find the Island.

I voted yes, but then read the responses and now I say no.

But I mainly feel stupid for forgetting about this scene entirely.
This season has made me cram wayyyy to much info into my brain.

In order for Daniel to have built the station, he would have to go back in time another 10 years or so. I don't really see the show doing that at this point, considering how much time we've already spent with Dharma this year.

They didnt have much interaction - but I don't discount the possibility they were romantically involved, in fact im leaning that way

I voted no for this exact reason. I suppose he could go back further in time and build it, but he wasn't doing it this time, also we haven't been told if you can control when you end up via time travel, it's not the Delorean afterall:biggrin:
NBC001, don't forget about the military, they were on the Island in the 50's, how did they find it? I suppose they could have found it by pure chance, but would the Island let that happen? Please bring up Desmond finding it by pure chance, or even Danielle and her team, I dare you, just to save some time, the above two examples of possible accidental encounters with the Island, are not accidental, the fate of both ships was to find the Island. Science v. Fate, fate would win out because you can't stop it, or more appropriately you can't change it, except maybe Desmond.

You know 2 weeks is a lot harder than I thought it would be:biggrin::frown::mad:

The thing about the military is, to take an H-bomb there and plan to explode it, they must have been able to make multiple trips, even if they originally found it by accident. I guess they could have set up a beacon of some sort.

maybe ms. hawking said that dharma built the lamppost so they could find the island "whenever" it happened to be, not just the first time?

So the Lamppost was built before Dharma found the island.

I voted no as well, & was struck by the possibility that maybe Alvar Hanso or someone in his family designed the pendulum etc after the book that had come from the Black Rock vessel had come into the Hanso family's possession all that time ago- could it be possible that generations of that family had been trying to rediscover a sure way back to the Island after one of their ancestors had arrived there on the Black Rock & then left (with the book) for whatever reason?
