View Full Version : Wait a minute, no smokey in the 70s?
RoyBatty 05-01-2009, 11:21 AM It just sort of struck me that we haven't seen any sign of smokey in the jungle trecking this season until the timeline is up to 1988. Unless I'm not remembering something.
Anyway, assuming that I'm right, could this be a hint that smokey doesn't go nutso until after the incident?
Fierro 05-01-2009, 12:03 PM that is what I was wondering also. The only reference to Smokie we have is the sonic fence and richard's comment about the fence working for other things but not for the hostiles...
But we haven't seen smokie in the 70s, and that makes me wonder if he is actually sleeping or trapped somewhere and the Incident is what's gonna wake him up.
Also doesn't all this we have witnessed in Dharma times debunk (once and for all) the idea that smokie was created by Dharma as some technological breakthrough?
Although we haven't seen smokey, we have barely been jungle trekking this season. I don't think we can rule it out yet.
Heroic Poser 05-01-2009, 12:17 PM I think it's because he's trapped a little somewhere.
My thought is, the "Incident" releases him.
Maybe the Incident breakes the statue and then releases Smoky?
Another Other 05-01-2009, 12:59 PM Well, from what was hinted at in the preview...
It looks like some of them will be emerging from a pool of water into what appears to be part of the Temple. And the Altar of Anubis is located deep in the Temple. Whatever happens in these last few episodes may very well be the catalyst that wakes it up considering their vicinity to its 'home'.
pascalephoto 05-01-2009, 01:14 PM What we know...
We know they have a sonic fence in the 70s.
We know Smokey can not go through the sonic fence.
We know the sonic fence does not keep Richard out.
We know Richard said the fence can keep other things out.
We know that Dharma stations are outside the sonic fence.
We know there is a hidden room in one of the barracks that summons Smokey.
What can we assume...
We can assume that Dharma built a barracks around this room.
We can then assume Dharma knew about this room.
What we do not know..
If Smokey was in the 70s

I don't know if the fence doesn't work on Richard. After all, Richard and Ben met a few years prior to Richard walking through the fence and chatting with Sawyer in Dharmaville. Ben easily could have told Richard the combo to the fence.
NotAnOther89 05-01-2009, 02:15 PM Weve seen only about 4-5 days worth of dharma times. They lived in 2004 for over 100 days and only encountered smokey like 4 times.

Well the incident would have the ability to destroy the island
I doubt the others would like that, so maybe they started summoning smokey a lot when they decide they wanted to get rid the DI

I did not say it did not work on Richard. I said it does not keep him out. Richard said the same thing to Horace in La Fleur. Weather he knows the code, he knows a way over/under or he is immune to sonic waves. I don't know.

It was mentioned in a podcast I believe that (just in case): Smokey had resided on the Island LONG before Dharma ever arrived there
khopzilla 05-01-2009, 04:32 PM On the Blast Door Map in Season 2 it read "Caduceus station believed to have been abandoned due to AH/MDG incident of 1985, or possible catastrophic malfunction of Cerebrus System."
it seems to me that Ole Smokey went a little goofy in 1985.
beema 05-01-2009, 04:49 PM Also doesn't all this we have witnessed in Dharma times debunk (once and for all) the idea that smokie was created by Dharma as some technological breakthrough?
For me, that was debunked a while ago
zillah 05-01-2009, 04:50 PM I think that with as twitchy as Dharma people are, the combinations for the sonar fence would be regularly changed ^_^.
Considering that Amy popped ear muffs on to avoid the Sonicness... or that Kate figured out one can climb a branch to land across it... it doesn't seem to be too hard to conquer the fence ^_~.

Yes, but Amy punched a code into the keypad, so she could have just set the fence to a low setting. I doubt that ear plugs would work when the fence was set at it's highest setting though.
amslostfan 05-01-2009, 05:17 PM Perhaps the incident and the release of electromagnetism from underground was what made smokey be released?
toddintexas 05-01-2009, 05:36 PM I always just assumed Smokey was there during DI times and the fence was built specifically to protect against Smokey, but we haven't seen any other evidence that it's there.
There's also what Chang says in the Dharma orientation video:
Our barracks are surrounded by a high frequency sonar fence to protect us from the island’s abundant and diverse wildlife.
Other than the wild boars, have we seen any evidence of abundant and diverse wildlife that the DI would need protection from? That's what makes me think they built it against Smokey, and the Hostiles, although as we know it doesn't work on Rciahrd.
They still haven't touched on one of the most interesting things about Dharma:how the hell they got to the island (& when)and how they already knew so much about its scientific properties.
Don't forget the hyros in the temple when Ben does his repentance, I think we are all in agreement that Anubus was praying or whatever to smokie correct? This would lead us to believe that he is around during DI times but I think we have not seen him.
Demonolith 05-01-2009, 06:30 PM Did anyone else notice that when they were working on the Swan station construction in this episode there was a noisy eerily similar to Smokey's rattlesnake-like clicking?

There are pictures of smokey engraved on the walls in the temple and elsewhere with him and other egyptian gods. Smokey has been around since the beginning.

I don't think the OP meant Smokey didn't exist in the 70's, just that Smokey hasn't really been released from the Temple, or given free reign of the Island during Dharma times. That's how I interpreted the original post.:undecide:

you know, I didnt notice that, but HEY! .......... maybe (since we already know that Smokey likes to disguise itself as familiar objects such as Yemi) it saw some of the machinery working at the Swan and it got confused and tried to disguise itself as a piece of construction equipment. Perhaps all this happened during "The Incident" and this sound got stuck in Smokey's behavior when it went all nutso crazy.
