When I watched the other episodes involving Kate's mother, and this one, I asked myself a question? Did Kate's mom always know what would happen if Kate found out the truth? If so, then why didn't she allow Kate's adoptive father to take her? Why raise a ticking time bomb near her husband, whom she loved so much? Did she ever care about either of them? Or was it all about her wanting a family?

Do you mean to ask if Diane knew Kate would kill Wayne? I don't think so. She is an abused woman, and why women stay with abusive husbands is a very complicated question. Put simply, they are addicted to the abuser, and they misinterpret that feeling as love.

Think of Diane as a heroin addict. Deep down she knows using is bad, her life is crap, and she's taking her daughter along for the ride. But her addiction is so powerful, she's become a master at pushing those thoughts way, so she can justify getting what she wants: the drug (Wayne). She loves her daughter, and wants to keep her with her, but her mind is so focused on the drug, on feeding the addiction, she's totally blind to the impact her addiction has on Kate, and what the ultimate consequences may be for all of them.

Now when Kate took Wayne away, her mother responded exactly like an addict would when a loved one took away their drug - with intense anger and self-pity. Wayne was gone, but her addiction to him was not, and probably did not recede for quite a while.

So, I do believe Diane loved Kate. But she was also a selfish and willful woman, and her addiction to Wayne, which was not love, was stronger than her love for Kate. And I think she was just realizing that when she saw Kate again in Eggtown (although not enough for her to take full responsibility and apologize).

I agree, Sandie. I also believe that Diane could have let Kate go live with her adoptive father, as implied in the episode "What Kate Did". If she didn't knwo what Kate would one day do, she had to at least known what kind of life and childhood Kate would have growing up with Wayne. I agree with you that she was selfish. Perhaps what she wanted, more than Wayne, or her daughter, was her sick and twisted version of a family. I also find it very amusing whan Diane saw Kate, saying that everything changed when she thought she had died. Yet the first thing that she said, when seeing her daughter alive again, was to sarcastically call Jack a liar, and then skip Kate to ask about her grandson. With all the sci fi and book references, it reminds me of Frankenstein, Dianewanted to create something beautiful to her liking, it goes awry, and then refuses to take responsibility. Instead, she puts all the guilt on Kate.

It is quite Dr. Frankenstein of her. She took a bunch of little pieces that resembled a family but got something completely monstrous. I so wish she had been willing to apologize for that. Selfish people don't change, though.

well, it's a moot point i suppose. However, i will say that Kate proved herself. She's nothign like her mother. She's at the top of my list for characters i want to see redeemed.
