View Full Version : why couldn't they hear after flashing to 2007?

So, I was wondering about that hearing loss that they had at first after waking up in 2007. At first I thought my stereo took a crap on me, haha, but then I thought about when Locke couldn't talk for awhile after something (I can't recall what) happened to him (maybe the hatch implosion?) and also didn't Desmond have some hearing impairment after he woke up naked? What do you guys and gals think? How is this significant?

Yes, after the hatch implosion, Charlie lost his hearing. Locke couldn't speak. Desmond lost his clothes. heh.

I think the simple answer is that the explosion from the bomb and/or EM force was too powerful for their ears and caused temporary loss of hearing.

and lmao, I thought my stereo went wonky on me, too!

Hearing loss was also atributed to time travel. Jin confirmed this to Hurley when he said you get a slight loss in hearing when jumping backwards and forwards in time. It is unknown if it was because of the bomb that went off. Probable implosion could have cause it or the temporal warp.

Its seems that in Lost, the primary side effect of massive explosions is an acute ringing in the ears, often accompanied by being flung into a tree. Its also very convenient that Kate didnt experience the other side effect, having your clothes blown off :)
This only works for Nuclear blasts and electomagnetic implosions, dynamite will blow you to small pieces (but only if your out in the open, if you detonate dynamite in a confined space, you just get the ringing in the ears)

You will also survive most gunshots for many hours, unless you deserved it.

Also be careful to avoid falling down a deep drill shaft, and having a crane fall on you. Your survival time is just hours.

Jin (or was it miles?) compared it to moving through time, like the previous flashes.

This to me backs up the idea that Eloise turned the wheel before the explosion.

If the bomb did go off, the pulses generated from a nuclear blast can cause hearing loss as it causes a change in PSI (air pressure). Just FYI if anyone cares.

I've been thinking about the timeline. I would guess that Sayid got shot about 10 minutes before the bomb went off right? And then they got flashed to 2007 where he passes out a few minutes in. Regarding Juliet's death, after that huge fall she lived for about 5 more minutes, which is arguably plausible.

Lol, so did my girlfriend. She was like "umm, is something wrong with the TV?"

I was like "no, we are 'hearing' from Kate's perspective, a bomb just went off near her"

which is essentially why I feel the cant here, but there's also the big energy pocket dealy

If I had to guess, Sayid got shot closer to half an hour before the flash, if not more.

Remember, he gets shot in Dharmaville. Then they travel towards the swan, then they stop so Jack and Sawyer can have their big dumb fight, and THEN they goto the Swan.

I actually thought it sounded like when you're underwater....to see the island underwater freaked me out, but then I fogot about it and the sound got better so I went with the bomb detonating/ear ringing effect.

I made the same connections you did.
Maybe they are back in 2004 just after Des used the failsafe key?
And maybe the plane is in 2007 (because of Jack's neck cut)- the island is underwater since they left it in 2004 and the island disappeared...

Eloise turning the wheel is an intriguing idea.... She does get off the island at some point and I don't think it was stated that Daniel was born on the island.

Seems only our Losties travel to 2007. And they are the only ones with temporary hearing loss.

What I can't understand is if it was the bomb that caused the deafness, then why is there anything left of them at all? Juliet was practically hugging the darn thing. If it went off she would be vaporized right? If they jumped before the bomb could harm them then why was Kate in a tree?

This is exactly what I've been wondering.
