MIB: "still trying to prove me wrong aren't you"
JACOB: "you are wrong."
MIB: "Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same."
JACOB: "It only ends once. Everything else before then is just progress"
MIB: "...do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?"
- S5 "The Incident"
Maybe I'm pointing out the obvious here but here goes:
The Background
-Jacob believes people can change to redeem mistakes they are brought up to make.
-MIB believes people can't change. They will always make the mistakes they are fated to make. He believes no one is good.
-MIB is here to end the world. But is trapped by the island and by Jacob.
-Everytime MIB is proven to be correct, Jacob goes back to select people he believe might be "Candidates" that can prove his redemption theory or further his cause.
-MIB then tries to get those "Candidates" to repeat their mistakes. If they don't, he kills them. MIB and Jacob wanted the same thing. For humanity to save themselves. But MIB believes it's no longer possible.
The "Rules" are in place to DEFINITIVELY determine who is right.
Relevance to this episode&season:
-Sawyer's FS shows that he will always want to kill the man that murdered his parents.
-Sayid's FS shows that he will always be a killer.
-Kate's FS shows (and prior assumptions) show she will always killer her father. And always be on the run.
Sawyer, Sayid and Kate are all on Team MIB.
-FS Jack has decided to stop believing he can never meet expectations. And has ensured his son will not follow him. Jack has changed.
-FS Ben has decided to sacrifice unethical power for selfless love of someone else. Ben has changed.
Jack and Ben are on Team Jacob.
-FS Locke accepted his disabilities and learned to love life anyway. Locke had changed.
Locke is dead.
The Rules:
-If Jacob selects you as a Candidate by touching you, you cannot die until you've had a chance to prove/redeem yourself or carry out the purpose Jacob has for you.
-If you are given a chance to redeem yourself and you don't...You're no longer a Candidate. MIB can also claim you OR kill you if he so chooses.
-MIB can possess any dead body in the vicinity of the island. Jacob has given him this power long ago and will work for as long as Jacob is alive.
-If Jacob selects you as a Candidate, you may go on to become a Leader. This gives you free reign except for one thing - You cannot kill a past/future island Leader or their family. If you do, you're no longer a Leader
-Only Candidates and Leaders can meet Jacob in person. And only if he allows it.
-Since Leaders and Candidates are able to see Jacob in person, they are the only ones with the ability to kill Jacob, if they choose to.
-MIB can end Mankind if he can escape his prison - the island and his prison keeper -Jacob. But this can only happen if Jacob is dead. And Jacob can only die if Mankind has failed him. And if Mankind has failed him, Jacob was wrong to begin with. Hence the point of these rules.
The Loophole:
- MIB is tired of this game. He sees that he is right and Mankind is corrupt. He wants to end this world and move on. But he can only do that if Jacob agrees with him, or Jacob is dead. Jacob will never agree with him.
-MIB decides that he can manipulate a series of events whereby he can go undercover, possessing a Leader`s dead body and demanding to see Jacob. Once he is there, he can use his authority to make some other Candidate or former Leader to kill Jacob. The hardest part of this was getting an ex-leader (Ben) to kill a future leader (Locke) which would mean Ben would lose his status.
-The Loophole worked. Jacob is dead.
The Story:
- With Jacob dead. MIB has no prison keeper. But he is also trapped in a human form. He can no longer become Smokey once he leaves the island.
-There are still some Candidates left. Ben is no longer one because of his past actions. Jack is one. And there are others (that we`ll find out about in upcoming eps) as Illana said.
-The Candidates can stop MIB. But with Jacob dead, they are also the last candidates left. If MIB can prevent their redemption, he can neutralize them, claim them for his group, or kill them.
-Widmore wants the POWER the island has. the time properties and all it can give him. Including potential immortality. He can not be a Candidate or Leader anymore so he is here to make a deal with MIB. He will join with his group to try to eliminate all the `Good`people left. He will also help bring MIB off the island so the rest of humanity can be destroyed.
-The alternate timeline is the finale `Jacob-touched`universe. MIB is manipulating events to bring all the Candidates together in that timeline and prevent any redemption (or kill each other) so he can finally be unleashed and end that reality...thereby ending Mankind forever.
If you read all that...read this dialogue again and tell me if it doesn`t make more sense:
