Hi there,
I've been reading some threads here on the board and noticed that some fans really got upset about Boone being killed off. I'm a member of several Lost message boards, and this stuff has been going on there as well.
(And before I write more: please excuse any grammar or spelling mistakes, I'm German)
I can, from a fan's perspective, understand that killing off a character is upsetting and sad, BUT, from a writer's perspective it was necessary. Being a writer myself (although so far only hobby writing ;) ) I know that sometimes you have to make decisions that will hurt the readers/audience, AND that will hurt you as a writer as well.
For a story to be realistic and therefore touching, exciting and believable, it has to resemble real life as closely as possible, and unfortunately not only people we don't know well die. It can and does happen to our parents, siblings, children or close friends. If a show (or any book) only killed off characters that aren't really important, whom the audience hasn’t adored, it'd be a crappy show, if you ask me.
I'm absolutely sure, you, the writers, didn't sit there, rubbing your hands, grinning mischievously and saying "Hehe, okay, who are we gonna kill just to p*** the fans off?" I'm sure there was much thinking going on, considering the consequences and finally coming to the result that, for the further storyline, Boone would be best candidate.
I mean look what's happening now, and I'm sure there's more to come. We all don't know yet what bigger consequences this might have for each character or even the whole situation. Maybe there's even some 'Greater Good' (although that episode title referred to what Sayid's friend said). Like in real life, nothing is solely bad, and even the worst experiences can lead to us learning something from them. If the show's as good as I think it to be, I'm sure there are some lessons to be learned from this. And we can already see that in the latest episodes, e.g. finally realizing that lying and not talking to each other will lead to no good on that island.
So, to you, the WRITERS: You did just fine, but I'm sure you know that. I am, however, really sad that Boone had to go, but I do understand you guys. :-*
And to the FANS: Please also try to understand the writers and don't be so rude.
Thanks,
Leandra
