I was ponding Lost and its meaning. I decided that perhaps the island manifests the trapped persons fears, imaginations, and dreams... the polarbears for instance, could possibly come from the fact that Walt and Hurly both read the magazine with the bear in it, or the security system in the forest is fear of the unknown, by those lost on the island. Nobody knows what the island is, thus it is nothing. John Locke, once crippled, had dreamed of being ambulatory once again, and thus the island granted his dream. And the hatch, was the safety that everyone dreamed of, mixed with Jacks fear of what the unknown brings; thus he meets up with the man he met before, down in the hatch. Please let me know if I am on the right direction.
