Hi again, Gregg!:)
What was the writers'/TPTB rationale for Ana-Lucia's "swan song"? Why did they decide to abandon her desire to rescue the children (to not send her off to get them?)? Why didn't they send her out in a "blaze of glory"?
Thanks for any insights!

I don't know for sure. My initial thought is she is a more complex character than that. If her one goal had been to get the kids back (as honorable as that is), her entire character would have been defined by only the events on the island. However, I think her character was defined by the events in her life before she landed on the island, and the island simply echoed them. Her character was not defined by her losing her baby (on the island: losing the kids) but by her stubbornness, her inability to emotionally connect with her mother, her boyfriend, her partner or anyone (on the island: not connecting with Jack or anyone in the group really), and by her sense of revenge on Jason, the guy who shot her (on the island: Goodwin and almost Henry).
But the events on the island seemed to have forced Ana Lucia to examine her life and change. By her refusing to kill Henry Gale, it showed her growth and what I think is her symbolic forgiving of Jason for shooting her. Had Michael not shot her, Ana Lucia would've been a different character. And it's that aspect by which I mean her character change is more complex in that smaller moment than her going out in a blaze of glory. That type of action moment may have been emotionally satisfying because it's about rescuing the kids, but it wouldn't have been about her character growth.
Again, I have no idea if that's what Damon and the writers were thinking. But it seems to me a valid and applicable explanation.

Thanks, Gregg, for an interpretation that never occurred to me. I read this back when you wrote it, but didn't think it was required to respond in a Q&A type forum. I didn't want to seem remiss, so again, I appreciate your thoughtful reply.
And, can we please bring Ana-Lucia back in dreams and visions? ;)
