View Full Version : Benry didn't con Sawyer at all

Something's been stuck in my craw for a week now, and I just figured out what it was.

Benry claimed to have out-conned Sawyer, but he did nothing of the kind. He had Sawyer locked in a cage, under armed guard. He has absolute power over him (and Kate and Jack).

Sawyer knows almost nothing about the Others. He had to assume Benry was telling the truth about the pacemaker... he has no idea what their capabilities are. He definitely knows they're nasty enough to have done what they claimed.

That's not a con. A con is when you use your wits and your power of persuasion to get someone to give you something they don't have to. There's no art and no skill in threatening someone you have power over with something you didn't do. Benry is an accomplished liar, but he's no con man.

Ah, but he thinks he is and that's how Sawyer will beat him in the end. Benry's big weakness is that he thinks he's smarter than everybody else. Sawyer will know how to exploit that.

I hope Sawyer has out-conned Ben. I would find it hard to believe that a pacemaker had been implanted based on the little wound. Sawyer may act like an ignorant hick, but he reads too much to be that ignorant. (Though he acted really concerned about his heart rate when looking at Kate. Even if he knows about the cameras, that would be a very subtle detail to fake a reaction to.) It will be fun to see who's the best liar.

I think Benry is the biggest con / lifelong con victim...he is the product of a huge 'con' and knows nothing else...his entire 'life socialization' is one big experimental 'con'. God knows what his 'trainers' taught him about life. He watches everything on secret TVs and for him this normal.

Juliet is NOT of this "school", she the purist...she wants him gone.

Thats my take on them...her weepey intro in ep. 1 was her realization that something in Othertown is WAY OFF. Benry had to go!

Sawyer wouldn't have told Kate to run without him unless he believed it. I think TPTB want us to believe that Benry pulled an awesome con on Sawyer, but it was nothing of the kind.

And if Sawyer's a real con man, he'll recognize that.

EXACTLY! :w00t:
I agree with so many others that Sawyer is a lot smarter than he is given credit for. His con act is the "dumb hick," but he reveals his intelligence in his many wisecracks that refer to literature, history, and philosophical discussion.

Maybe after the hiatus we will see Sawyer use Benry's weakness (the fact that he THINKS he's smarter than everyone else) against him and humiliate him.
