View Full Version : Why is there a intercom in the hydra
Thongy 10-08-2006, 05:52 AM In the same why that someone has inquired as to why polar bears would have symbols of a knife and a fork on a button, I wondered why a shark or dolphin would have "communicate" (or was it "communication"?) written on a button in their tank. OK, so they are intelligent creatures, but I thought that was a lttle beyond the pale!!! I don't think the Others are being quite so thruthful as they would have us believe. The cages/tanks weren't for animals at all.
paperlanterns 10-08-2006, 05:57 AM interesting... that, or the animals were genetically engineered to be smarter.
i forgot about the communicate button in the aquarium! that really doesnt make much sense unless it could be used underwater :undecide:

Why wouldn't there be a "communicate" button for the vetarinarian(s) and their team to communicate with other dharma staff while working on sharks or dolphins?
Thongy 10-08-2006, 06:18 AM I'm a simple soul....I thought it was for the dolphin!!!!!! ROFLMAO
Automission 10-08-2006, 06:36 AM Its kinda obvious the side jack was on was for them to work on the animals and to talk to the people outside the operating room, if you want to call it that. I doubt either of those two rooms housed the animals, but another room somewhere in that hatch does.

I was under the impression that wherever Jack was being held was underneath the aquarium that he asked about. I didn't think he was actually in the tank, never saw a tank with doors and tables etc. I could be wrong, but I thought he heard a noise (like a whale or dolphin, something like that) looked up and that's when he started asking about the tank/aquarium. I could be wrong though.
sawyer101 12-11-2006, 07:35 AM when watching episode 1 i though it was a bit
odd that there would be a intercom in a shark aquarium.
so that got me thinking that maybe it was made for like an interagation room like its being used for now and Ben did say to Juliet "you never made soup for me" which i think means that he was in the hydra being interagated like Jack is.
well thats my theory like to know whay you guys think.
Anime_Otaku 12-11-2006, 09:57 AM it's outside the tank so it's not unreasonable that it was to be used if something unusual or unhealthy was observed on the shark or dolphin that they'd use it to call for the veterinarian. I'm more concerned with the fact that (I think) Ben said it was broken but it has sporadically come to life.
Get_A_Klugh 12-14-2006, 03:52 PM Why wouldn't there be a "communicate" button for the vetarinarian(s) and their team to communicate with other dharma staff while working on sharks or dolphins?
But assuming the inside of the tank was filled with water, wouldn't the DHARMA veternarian have needed to wear scuba gear to get inside, while treating or tending to the sharks and dolphins?
Anime_Otaku 12-18-2006, 04:42 PM I'm pretty sure it's shown to be on the outside of the tank.
Lavender 01-12-2007, 04:44 PM In the second show of season 2 when Michael and Sawyer are fighting on whats left of the boat, Sawyer is bleeding into the water and its attracting sharks. There is a shot of a shark swimming infront of the camera view, and close to its tail is the Dharma symbol (dun dun dun!!)
Maybe they are using the tank they held Jack in to alter the sharks the be "watch dogs"?
Sorry, kinda away from the intercom part, but you jogged my memory!!
Blerg... Just read a whole thread about this and how it was supposed to be an inside joke kinda thing. Sorry!
FlashesBeforeYourEyes 01-16-2007, 07:52 PM On your inquiry on why there was a fork and knife symbol:
What else would there be? I mean I can understand maybe a fish symbol or something of that sort. But, I am guessing these bears were bred in captivity so why would it need to be a fish if they would still associate that symbol with food no matter what?
If someone is raised to believe that a button with a symbol of a car on it will give them food if they push it then when they are released they are going to try to eat a car. It doesn't matter what the symbol is to the bears as long as it represents "eat".
penyours 01-16-2007, 09:27 PM Yeah I think the knife and fork was more for our benefit as viewers to make the association that it was an operant box and also so it made sense that Sawyer would try so hard to push the button.
princessholloway 01-25-2007, 12:32 PM The bears and marine animals i think have being modificated by the dharma people.Making them super clever.Only joking.....I actually don't know. But i think theres some irony in the way they put sawyer in a bear cage..bears are aggressive and violent like sawyer and they put jack in a dolphi cage, dolphins are inteligent and beautiful.....did anyone else notice that?

Oh that's interesting, I wouldn't say that Saywer is not beautiful or intelligent or that jack isn't aggressive, but delineating the two by the cages they were put in is interesting.

What a nice idea of symbolism princessholloway :)

Nice idea ... but most bears are not violent unless threatened - and I think they're quite beautiful creatures - while dolphins can be ruthless, aggressive pack hunters.
Just sticking up for the bears here ;)

i totally agree as it would look pretty random, sawyer pushing a button that he didnt know what it was for an then getting a fish biscuit :undecide: (is it just me or when you look at sawyer eating it can you practically taste the ickyness:laughing:?)

Yeah whenever I watch that scene when the fishbiscuit falls out of the machine I always think "that biscuit fell into the dirt and now you are eating it" and then I think about fish food and what is smells like :D The man was truly hungry I guess.
