Sawyers assessments con artist skills or maybe police or military training?
(remember in the British ad promo one of the was a cop before Ana)

SAWYER: Two of those guards got some real fight in them. The rest of them, I'm not so much worried about. That heavy-set guy -- he packs a hell of a punch. The shaggy-haired kid's got some kind of marshal arts training, but I think I could take him if I had to. Oh, FYI -- those zapper things got a safety on them.

KATE [smiling]: Did you see the look on their faces when you got a hold of that rifle?

SAWYER: I'm guessing most of these boys have never seen any real action. But that blond who had a gun pointed at you? She would have shot you -- no problem.

I think that Sawyer has to way too many issues with authority figures to have ever been able to serve in either the military or the armed forces. I think that he is just really good at reading people, provided he isn't emotionally involved with them. That is probably part of the reason that he strives to live as an outsider. The further removed and detached he is from people, the better he is at reading them and using that information to his advantage.

I loved that scene with him and Kate though. Great dialog!

I think that Sawyer mistrusts Juilet primarily because she foiled his first escape attempt. You could tell he found her attractive, and he clearly didn't expect her to shoot him with a dart and return him to his cage.

Well coupon - I like the idea!!! I've always hoped that Sawyer would turn out to be a rogue agent for the CIA or FBI or some kinda "special op's" guy... :coolgleamA:

But I think that LITSEy has a point about the lack of authoratative respect Sawyer has!!

IMO - In the episode "Everyman For Himself", Sawyer shows he has skills as a boxer in prison. I'm thinking he learned to "size up" the competition there. He probably had to assess the skills of the other boxer in order to know how to "whup 'em"!
