Sawyers' reading of the Fountainhead offers another clue as to "life's purpose". Existence or life must be self-sustaining, that all must work/play a part and offer something or you become non-essential. Locke has abandoned his initial role as "provider", and is more interested in control, even revenge, a very selfish role/act. Locke is acting basically against the "rules" of the island, therefore his existance is questionable. Charlie, what is his role? Find the JOB of each member of the island, those who don't contribute are probably doomed. Unless Locke find himself, his character is doomed, and I predict old Locke will come around, as for Charlie, he's toast.
The Fountainhead also looks at free will and pureness, or true morality and not necessarily organized religion. Basically, the utopian concepts and objective society that "the others" have formed, the karma, the yin/yang, good/evil, black/white etc. These themes repeat themselves throughout the entire show.
