So when are we going to find out what the giant rock foot with four toes was all about? season 5?

It could be in the Dharma episode or the Ben episode of this season, it doesn't really matter. If you wanted the answers right away you might as well just read all the spoilers for the next few episodes.

I've always just thought the Foot was there to show us that people have been coming to the island for a long long time. They'll probably show a close-up one day where you can see the broken pinkie toe part and say something like, "We weren't the first people to find this island, Jack" and that will be the end of the Foot Saga.

Someone said when it was first shown that it could be a chimpanzee foot (because of the four toes) and that it had some connection with Dharma. I forget the reason, but maybe someone else remembers it.

see this is why i stopped coming to these boards and watching the show every week. now i dvr 5 shows, then watch them in order. thats the usual time it takes to fully understand whats going on with the given story line.. i like some of your ideas but honestly the others are going to another location...maybe the place the 'others' really came from. remember they took over all the dharma facilities since they won the 'purge'.

anyway back to the foot. i understand the producers wanted us to realize that island has been around for ages with different people/cultures living on it. what i don't understand is why it takes an entire season to explain something which should be fairly easy. why are the others on the island. it should have been taken care of in the first 10 episodes. i know we'll realize soon enough. but its very frustraiting. it took us the whole 1st season to get into a hatch (great cliff hanger btw)...it took the whoooooooole 2nd season to find out that the hatch was apart of the dharma initiative....and was very much real. i've could have sum up this whole paragraph in a few sentences...see where i'm going?

i understand there wouldn't be much of a show without the secrets but honestly more clues wouldn't hurt...or at least a little more mythology and less romantic BS. i don't care who's doing who....just answer some friggin questions as hurley said

oh this just in....season 4 is going to be all about finding out who jacob is...hang on to your pants kids

Well its the complete opposite of a show like maybe 24 or Prison Break where many resolves come quickly. That just ain't gonna happen and I am surprised after watching almost 3 seasons of non-question answering shows that people who don't like it still keep watching.

I think you are right and everything could be explained in a 3 sentence pitch and things are going slow, but hey I had to wait 3 years to find out that Darth Vader was Luke's father with no background in between. There was just this lame novel called Splinter of the Mind's Eye.

Anyway back to the Foot. I would rather have seen the Foot back when we did and be able to speculate on it then have Jack run into it in the jungle in one episode and have Ben tell him the history of it right away. But thats just me.

ok, here are my two cents...both of them...together...in one hand...

so outside buddhist temples they sometimes have statues of 'protective warriors' who are protecting the temple. The warriors are often standing over a defeated demon figure (who I believe has four toes). I'm not sure what the reason for it is, but it could have some connection.

Also, the dharma symbol that is appearing on everything is sybmolic of a protective force...it's like a turtles shell. Some people hang them on their home to fend off bad stuff.

:-/ This show makes me want to invent time travel so I can see next weeks episode now.

I'm not quite sure why so many people here assume the foot is ever going to be explained. It works better as atmosphere.

I never expected them to solve the giant foot mystery this season.. but I wish the losties would drop it into a conversation once in a while. I mean if I was stranded on an island and found a mysterious giant foot statue I'd be talking about it nonstop.

I presume the giant stone foot will be explained in the finale where in a flash back it is broken jumping over a giant stone shark.

Giant Foot
The Black Rock
Smoky
Radio Tower
The Numbers
The Healing Power of the Island
Where the Hair Brushes Went

There are a lot of things TPTB have not explained. The great thing about a mystery is that anything is possible. It keeps us guessing. It keeps this board buzzing. Everyone knows that they themselves has solved the mystery, but 10 different people have solved it 10 different ways. When the mystery is reveled, seven people are going to be a little disapointed, one person is to tell us they knew it all along and one person one going to be angry. Once the mystery is reveled we will heve to end that discussion.

While I can't explain the four toed part yet, here's an insight I had while noticing the giant statue ( or lack thereof....)

The Colossus of Rhodes, which was a giant statue of the Greek God, Helios.
The feet, stood planted on either side of the Harbor on the isle of Rhodes.

An earthquake hit the isalnd in 224 b.c. and snapped the statue at the knees, with the rest of the statue falling to the ground.

The Colossus is considered to be one of the 7 wonders of the world, and at the time of it's creation, was the tallest statue in the world.

It should also be noted that through time, Helios (the god the statue was built after) became closely associated to the god Apollo.

The roman equivalent of Helios, is Sol; translated from latin, meaning; Sun.

This is just a thought I had, regarding the statue. Not sure exactly what it means, if anything. But in terms of the mythology aspect of the show, it struck me as relevant.

I am still very curious to see how the giant foot plays out.:)

The statue is also a reference to the poem Ozymandias, by Shelley, which is featured in the chapter of Watchmendevoted of the character of the same name. He's the one who:

brings a bunch of people to a secret island where massive psychological and teleportation experiments are being conducted in a twisted attempt to save the world.

We'll probably get some more info on its origins in "The Brig" and/or "The Man Behind the Curtain," but I just took it to indicate that there was a native (or at least ancient) population on the Island at one point.
