Let me put it so you'll understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you John? What if I told you that, somewhere on this island, there is a very large box and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it when you opened that box, there it would be? What would you say about that, John?
If "the box" brought a surgeon for Ben and also brought Cooper for Locke then who wished for the other losties?
If Cooper got to the island without needing a whole plane load of people to crash why did Jack?
Is there a chance that the amount of Losties is the same as the amount of Others?

Jacob wanted the plane full of people, which had Jack as a special gift for Ben. And yes, there is a chance that the amount of LOSTies is the same as the amount of Others...
*wakes up....*
Where am I...?

I read somewhere (possibly here) a theory that Jack's dad isn't dead anyway. I don't think they had a full explanation of it, but something like, we found out a certain spider could paralyse you, making you appear dead.
So I'm thinking something like, what if the others had basically made Jack's dad appear dead to get him on the flight he was on. (We did see Jack find his dad's empty coffin - his father may have never been in there/on the plane).
The guy who had found Desmond - now, the day that he went out and Desmond followed him seemed a bit set up to me anyway. It just seemed to me like he wanted Desmond to see the (big!!) rip in his suit and follow him. (Plus he said goodbye and judging by Desmond's reaction, he never said bye before going into the jungle before and I'm guessing he knew that would intrigue Desmond and help make Des follow him).
I'm now guessing that he (at least for one reason) lured Desmond out of the hatch so he'd be late in pushing the button - therefore crashing the plane.
I think it's possible the others interfered in (at least some of) the losties lives before they came to the island (like with Jack's dad) to get them on the plane, then they basically made Desmond cause it to crash.
Sounds like a lot of bother but at least it makes sense in the terms of it could happen, it's not a sci-fi/supernatural thing, it's more based in reality.
Then again, how did they know (EG) Jack would survive the crash? Well, maybe they were willing to take that chance or there is something a bit sci-fi about it - that somehow the island/Jacob/whatever would let Jack survive the crash.
I'm basically making this up as I go along, can you tell? *lol*
