Dear Mr. Cuse,
I have enjoyed watching LOST for the past 3 seasons. I hope you can clear up some of my confusion regarding your decision to kill Charlie off. I did read your reasons in that article posted after the finale’, however your reasons seem rather lame for lack of a better word. In your article you said something to the effect that there was no way to get around Desmond’s prognostication’s regarding Charlie’s death. What are you talking about? I as well as other fans felt that Desmond being able to save Charlie ala, an Abraham and Isaac moment would have been more poignant than killing him off. Plus, there were several references to Abraham and Isaac throughout this whole Charlie dying thing. The test for Abraham was his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son and the test for Isaac was his willingness to be sacrificed. Both Desmond and Charlie fulfilled that test in the Looking Glass. That was all both needed to do-be willing. How amazing that test would have been for both Desmond and Charlie. What a powerful moment you could have created using that analogy. Besides that, heroic people don’t always die. I know many heroic people who have done incredible acts of bravery who live to tell about it, and return to their community’s heroes among them. Charlie should have been given that moment, returning with honor to the community and taken his place as a leader there where he would finally be valued.
I thought you and Damon were writers who were honorable men (the last of a dying breed). When you told Kristen from “E” that you would “see what the fans had to say” regarding Charlie, I as well as the other Charlie fans, took you at your word and thought you would really listen to us. I saw the outpouring of messages pleading, in fact BEGGING you not to kill him off. Why would you disrespect us fans so much?
Then, I found the article where you, the Producers pledged not to kill him off because he (Dom) “proved to be such a popular character”. Please explain?
Some say his story was done but I disagree. I think Charlie’s story was just beginning. He could have finished the church that he and Mr. Eko started. He finally proved to Claire that he could be trusted and she was relying on him. Heck with what that stupid psychic said about raising Aaron alone. You could have done a whole thing about Claire getting past that stuff (like Hurley breaking his curse with the van), and breaking that psychic curse as well. Oh and speaking of Hurley, Charlie and he were the best comedy team since Abbott and Costello. You need more stories with just them. Then, there are still questions about his relationship with his father. I remember it seemed strained in “Fire & Water”. What happened there? In season 1, he trusted Locke with his life before Locke beat him up in season 2. Why not explore that more now that Locke is turning “darker” for lack of a better word. Charlie seemed to be Locke’s “voice of reason” before the hatch exploded at the end of season 2. Maybe the tables could be turned and Charlie could be “healing” Locke as Locke helped “heal” Charlie with his addiction. Just some thoughts for you to ponder.
