View Full Version : Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute
Dan Clancey 02-02-2008, 07:20 PM Maybe this is off the track but in Season 2 when Dave escaped from Santa Rosa it looked like Santa Rosa was downtown in the streets, the noise indicates Santa Rosa is in the city.
Then when Charlie visits Hurley, they are outside in the countryside with hills behind them. Does this tell us anything about the significance of Santa Rosa in the overall story of Lost? Movement in time and place?
Is there any indication that Hurley is in the Santa Rosa institution in the flash forwards?

uh,
yes.
KeepingAwake 02-03-2008, 12:34 PM Is there any indication that Hurley is in the Santa Rosa institution in the flash forwards?
Yes, with the strongest being that Matthew Abaddon is wearing a Santa Rosa visitor badge.
Heh. Mebbe Abbadon's comment about moving Hurley to a better place made me think he was in a second institution. Not sure.
onelittlenumber 02-03-2008, 03:38 PM It could front a very busy street, yet have a rolling lawn behind it. That's true of a lot of California vistas.
Dan Clancey 02-03-2008, 05:17 PM Correct, it could be in front of a busy street, but knowing that Santa rosa was going to play a large part in season 4, (Find 815 clue) I thought maybe there is more to this place than just a menal institute...... Not trying to pull back theories of it all being in Hurley's mind, but I wonder if this place is more important that we think??? rewatching Dave makes me think that Hurley is pivotal to the storyline of Lost.
seaquelost 02-03-2008, 05:24 PM I agree, Dan. Hurley's has a strong connection to the island....through the numbers. This makes him very special/important in my book.

Yep, it could be much more than that. I'm merely responding to its physical location: I don't think it necessarily changed. But yeah, Hurley is always key, because of the numbers.
fighting69th 02-04-2008, 06:41 AM Abaddon (Hebrew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Hebrew_language) אבדון Avaddon, meaning "destruction"). In Biblical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_Bible) poetry (Job (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Job) 26:6; Proverbs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Proverbs) 15:11), it comes to mean "place of destruction", or the realm of the dead, and is associated with Sheol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheol). Abaddon is also one of the compartments of Gehenna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gehenna).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbadon#_note-oxford) By extension, it can mean an underworld abode of lost souls, or hell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell).
RipperJack 02-04-2008, 08:08 AM Well, yes. When Matthew Abbadon, the "attorney" for Oceanic approched him in the hospital, he said he could get Hurley out of Santa Rosa and into a private hospital.
emmaAmethyst 02-05-2008, 04:09 AM My guess is that the location used for the mental hospital was the closest thing to the old Camarillo Mental Hospital (http://www.imagesmithstudio.com/sm/OHTour/OHindex.htm)they could find in Hawaii. (If you're around Los Angeles & need a classical mental institution, Camarillo is the one to use! That's what Carnivale' used for Brother Justin's mental hospital !)
Camarillo in fact is in town, but also has considerable open space & rolling hills. And is relatively close to Los Angeles. That's the imagery I think they were aiming for.
Earendil 02-05-2008, 11:40 AM The location they used was the YWCA Downtown in Honolulu. So that would explain the busy street.
sara_elizabeth 02-05-2008, 11:58 AM It just looked like a nice lawn to me. I wouldn't read too much into it.
Dan Clancey 02-06-2008, 01:41 AM it was nice lawn..:)
Santa Rosa could be important that's all. Hurley, Libby, the numbers....
i_wana_get_lost_with_starla 02-09-2008, 01:51 AM You gotta love the way LOST uses locations in the show. Santa's play house is definitely big to the story... number's, Locke's mom, Libby, Leonard, Dave, and so on.
you guys remember these famous linee ???
HURLEY: Awhile ago I was in this kind of psych ward
JACK: You were in a psych ward?
HURLEY: I'm not crazy.
JACK: I'm not saying you are.
