I understood that the crew only knew about the Island but had not been there based on the fact that they were not experiencing any problems like bloody noses and they still recognized each other.

Remember that Naomi was on the boat and didn't seem to have had experienced any problems.

I think the crew knew not to venture too close to the Island because of what had happened to other crews on other boats; whom I assume are now dead.

It is revealed later that Minkowski and another person left the freighter and headed toward the island. So that's what he meant by again.

Perhaps the four sent to the island from the freighter were sent for the purpose of disabling something that has the effect of making approaching the island impossible or unwise. Not sure if I believe that the freighter is going to the island--Abaddon seemed to describe a mission that just involved Naomi getting the four in and out. But, who knows.

confirmed- Minkowski said 'once'. There must be something about this 'vector' and or reaching the island via submarine that prevents side effects. Minkowski and 'Brandon' found this out too late (they took the tender to look at the island and obviously crossed some threshhold (much like the electric fence we saw on the island perhaps?)

Yes. A tender is a smaller boat used to "tend" to larger boats. Large freighters and cruise ships have them to shuttle people or goods from the ship to shore where the depth of the port (or the lack of a port at all) might not allow a large ship to get close enough to dock or shore because of its deeper draft. The larger ship anchors in deeper water, the smaller more maneuverable shallow draft tender goes to the island.

I got the impression that George and Brandon got curious about what the island might have looked like, took the tender out for a spin and got a little too close. They turned around once Brandon started acting up. I don't think that they have all been to the island or close to it but George, Frank and Sayid had. George is predicting that they will all go mad once they start to get closer to the island....he is in a frantic delusional state. I think that they are leading us to believe that George was affected more because of his constant exposure to electromagnetic radiation from being cooped up in the radio room (remember his "all the calls go through me" statement) This then caused him to be "unstuck" when he crossed the some threshold around the island and turned around an came right back the way he came.

Naomi's mission changed on the boat when she saw the future, then she franticaly fleed into the chopper to prevent the enevitable. but instead got course corrected by Locke.:eek2:

Well, it didn't happen to Frank (he got in and he got out without problem), it didn't happen to Miles, Charlotte, Daniel and Naomi as they went in and it didn't happen to Sayid when he left... So Daniel asked about high level or radiation because it was a necessary factor in this. Ergo, this doesn't happen to all who cross the barrier.

I also think Minkowski meant the trip he and Brandon made. But it is rather intriguing if there is a plan to go in for the rest of them :rolleyes:

Daniel's seen it often enough that he knew immediately to ask Des what year it was, and later made some generalizations to Jack about its random effects on others.

I don't agree. Daniel knew what to ask, because he is a genius :biggrin: And because this is what he studied (and what Oxford frowned upon LOL).

They knew because it already happened twice: Brandon was already dead, and Minkowski was following in his line. But they didn't know what it was. Minkowski kept repeating that "see, I'm not crazy, it's happening to him too", which means that they treated him like a mental patient - with sedatives. And look how well that turned out.

Well, indeed Faraday was unsure about the effects, he said it was random and it could happen in many different ways... Sometimes it's days, sometimes it's years... so he had some kind of an experience with it. But just as I said, he was researching this effect.
