I haven't seen this discussed, sorry if it has been.

Maybe she doesn't know who/what she's calling... or she just didn't realise it was the same thing Charlie was talking about?

I think after the dudes at the research station "found it", they only found about the region where the implosion came from.

After this Penny started transmitting to that area, hoping to get an answer.

But how did Penny know Des would be in that area? And why did she kept transmitting there if she didn't?

I think Kelvin could be the link. He sent the photo Des had about Penny to somebody (my guess DI), and Penny found out about the island.

She must have checked into her dads projects more after getting the signal though and talking to Charlie.

Hmmm, that's a good question. I guess maybe Minkowski never told her where they were or something. Or maybe in that moment with the excitement and everything the freighter people just slipped her mind or something like that?

Jack, Des, and Penny stay on the phone a lot.
I know this seems like an inane comment but I've always commented about how much Jack talks on the phone - in fb's, ff's, and now on the island. He took Naomi's phone, he took Ben's walkie, he took Daniel's phone. He squanders their minutes.

Then during The Constant, it dawned on me that Des is on the phone a lot, too.

As soon as I saw this thread, I thought "Penny, too".

No one else spends nearly as much time on the phone as these three.

Re Penny - you can't just chalk up her many phone calls to her not being present on the ship on the island, because dangit, she's always ringing in, even when there's no apparent explanation..

Penny told Des in xmas phone call that she knows about the island. She knows roughly where it is since the hatch explosion. She probably has enough money to get satellite photos of the area. (Remember in S1, Sayid said a satellite only does any good if you "know where to point it.") The island itself wouldn't show up in satellite photos, probably, but the freighter would. No idea how Pen knows how to contact the freighter, but "with enough time and money you can find anything." That's my guess.

Could the "friend" on the freighter who unlocked the door for Sayid and Desmond given her the number (so to speak)?
