View Full Version : Juliet's Zen Rock Garden
Saukkomies 03-11-2008, 01:04 PM In this episode we see Juliet drawing lines (http://bp2.blogger.com/_Hxnvg45zlCw/R9K-oDMazqI/AAAAAAAAAWo/I1mJu7_YjLQ/s1600-h/other_woman_00014.jpg) in one of those meditation mini Zen sand box (http://www.cherryblossomgardens.com/images/zen_garden_deluxe.jpg) thingies with a faux bamboo rake.
What do you all make of this?
In the traditional full-sized Zen rock gardens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:RyoanJi-Dry_garden.jpg) they are often set up with large stones surrounded by sand that is raked to resemble ocean waves. The stones are supposed to represent islands in the sea, or so I've heard.
So, is this an Easter Egg? What to make of the six rocks in Juliet's mini garden? Are they to represent something? Islands? Other than Craphole and Hydra, are there other islands in the Archipelago? Or do the rocks represent something else?
And what do the lines in the sand represent? There are two sets of lines - one set is straight and the other is wavey. Is this to represent the sea, or something else?

:roflmao: Oh, how I miss Shannon. When I read it like that, I keep imagining official cartographers writing Craphole I. on a map. :lol2: Sorry.
I don't think it's an Easter Egg and if it is, then it's a pretty cryptic one. Everybody draws those squiggly lines in the sand. I guess we could ask Elizabeth Mitchell. But seriously... she's probably done that scene a few times and just went with what feels natural, I doubt anybody instructed her to draw waves.
The rocks... I suppose someone could have counted them... I can't comment on something spoiler-y here but it's really too obscure for me to consider it an Easter Egg, even though I'll say this intro in the episode was supposed to be a fakeout about Juliet being one of the Oceanic Six (which... how likely was it since she wasn't on the plane anyway?)
Sawyerluver 03-11-2008, 01:12 PM Saukkomies, I'm sure Juliet's drawings in the Zen rock garden represent something. The Lost writers love to add things like that. My first thought when you mentioned the 7 rocks was the rocks represent the Oceanic 6 plus Aaron = 7.
Maybe the lines in "the sea" just represent a Tempest; a storm? Foreshadowing maybe?

Yeah, I too miss Shannon.

Isn't it intriguing though to compare the six rocks with the Oceanic Six? After all, the rocks are in the "ocean" of the sandbox... And the interrupted wavey lines might represent the Oceanic Six's interrupted fates? I'm of course just wasting bandwidth mostly with this, but what the hay? it is fun to discuss these things, no? ;)
100%

Actually, I at first miscounted - I wrote that there were 7 rocks at first, but then went back and recounted them just to make sure, and it turns out there are only 6 rocks.
Interesting - the Tempest....
hugh_person 03-11-2008, 02:00 PM And what do the lines in the sand represent? There are two sets of lines - one set is straight and the other is wavey. Is this to represent the sea, or something else?
The thought that first came into my head when I first saw this scene was that it represented the time anomalies on the island. Outside time (straight lines) being overwritten with island time (wavy lines).

Maybe that's it.
I also noticed that there were two groupings of rocks. One group of four on the left, and one group of two on the right. If (okay, going way out on a limb here) the six rocks in the "sea of sand" represent the Oceanic Six, then perhaps the fact that two of them are separated from the rest indicates that two of the Oceanic Six are also separated from the other four? Kate and Aaron, perhaps? Shrug shrug shrug???
Claudia815 03-11-2008, 03:26 PM Actually... we know for a fact... ok we know from a spoiler that two of the Oceanic Six
aren't on either Team Crazy or Team Sexy (as some of us have dubbed Team Locke and Team Jack  ) and we're left speculating that they'll make their own fate and perhaps their own deal with the freighties.

So maybe the rock garden is an Easter Egg after all.
Lost_in_CA 03-11-2008, 04:30 PM I didn't catch the number of rocks on the first viewing but did on the second (or was that the third? fourth? fifth? ;) ) and thought of the O6. The two off on their own made me think of Sayid and Ben.

Hugh,I like that interpretation! Also, for some reason wavy lines make me think of electromagnetic waves that may surround the Island and to leave you have to head out on a straight bearing and exit through a storm.
I'm like you Saukkomies, I love trying to analyze stuff like that.;)
switzer 03-11-2008, 05:16 PM Actually... we know for a fact... ok we know from a spoiler that two of the Oceanic Six
are Sun and Jin
which still could mean they are seperated from the others, but that leaves Sayid still seperated from the group as well
masterben 03-11-2008, 06:32 PM i guess the good or bad thing about lost is sometimes we see things and not sure if its real or not

You put into words my thoughts exactly!!
LightMeDark 03-12-2008, 06:04 PM It would be funny if the adam and eve black and white stones came from that garden.
mom2haylil 03-12-2008, 06:09 PM The screen cap at the beginning didn't show all the rocks and I don't remember it from the episode, but I wonder if they are configured at all like the notes from Daniels book and the hatch map. I have seen those lined up together and they match- maybe this does too?
