View Full Version : way to go Bernard
woland 04-25-2008, 12:34 AM I know Bernard didn't have many scenes but they were great, Bernard is turning into a useful guy on your team, whether taking out Others or exposing lying freighties. I loved that scene where he said, "he's lying" and Faraday's reaction was great, "you know morse code." But the expression on his face said, we've underestimate you people. Everytime Bernard is on the show I like him more. I'm kind of hoping he's the one who kills Keamy.
KellieLeigh 04-25-2008, 01:15 PM YES!! Love, love, love him! He never has much to do, but when he does something he is awsome!
Burnt Sienna 04-25-2008, 01:23 PM Anyone else notice that Jack wanted Bernard for something? A Doctor asking a Dentist for medical advice perhaps?
AboutBunnies 04-25-2008, 01:25 PM I agree...I though he started out looking kind of "loser-ish," helplessly stuck in the tree, then later trying to do the SOS message w/ stones. But he def. shouldn't be taken for granted. Way to go Bernard! And I do miss Rose. They're the only two characters on the island I think I could genuinely like in real life.
100%

I assumed it's because he knew that Bernard knew Morse Code, or at least suspected as much by Bernard's expression when they were discussing fixing the phone.

who could not like hurley?
AboutBunnies 04-25-2008, 01:39 PM who could not like hurley?Ack! You're right! Though it doesn't seem to be particularly safe in his vicinity off-island!
woland 04-25-2008, 01:43 PM I watched the episode a second time and I loved that eyebrow raise he gave to Faraday after Faraday said, you know morse code. Sort of Bernard saying, I'm smarter than you are. And Jack knew that Bernard knew morse code when Bernard said couldn't you use it like a telegraph, that tipped Jack that he might know morse code. Bernard is turning into the Claudius of lost, isn't he(reference to I, Claudius).
chemgirl81 04-25-2008, 01:48 PM Bernard is awesome.
Shardyk 04-25-2008, 01:55 PM I'm really glad they're finding stuff to do with Bernard. He seems a lot more capable without Rose constantly on his back telling him he can't do anythig worthwhile. My favorite scene was with him and Jin in Ji Yeon. I never made the connection that they were the only two husbands on the island, and it was a very touching scene.

Yes, thank you! I love Rose, but she's often overbearing and unfair to him, imo. I'm very happy to see Bernard involved in the beach plot, it makes up for him immediately spilling the beans in the finale.
I kinda hope the Dr.Nadler who works with Jack in TTLG is a relative of Bernard's so we can get more background on him. I think it's promising that we're given these little details about Bernard, in case they ever give him a more fleshed out past.
vangelicmonk 04-25-2008, 02:11 PM The writers and creators have done something great with this show. They have turned actors who are mostly stuck in supporting roles into great actors. Also unknown actors as well. This is what great writing, directing, and creativity can do. Who needs Hollywood action and big star losers when you can have genuine art on a pop culture dime.
divinesynder 04-25-2008, 03:00 PM I'm just wondering how a dentist knows morse code. Is there an episode where Bernard mentions knowing it or someting?

Maybe he has hobbies? O.o And there was an subtle suggestion early on that he knew it because he spoke of making a visual message that came from morse code short hand for help. The message, and the episode title are both S.O.S., which for any kid who's ever had toy walkie talkies with morse code translations on their front is ... --- ...
woland 04-25-2008, 03:27 PM There are several explanations I can think of as to why Bernard knows morse code, certain boy scout troops teach it and he could have been a scout and could remember it from childhood. He could be a HAM radio enthusiast. Or he could have served in the military, he may not have seen combat but worked in the support side and learned morse code.
shootingstar 04-25-2008, 03:47 PM I love Bernard and that was a great scene by him. Loved the expression on his face when he said "he's lying." Go Bernard
kansasgal71 04-25-2008, 03:51 PM I have always thought there was something more to Bernard. Remember when rose told him the he is a dentist not Rambo? That always struck me as funny. I am sure he could have learned how to use a gun in any number of ways, and learned morse code in many ways, but how did he know that the phone could be rigged to send and receive morse code???
hula girl 04-25-2008, 03:55 PM my vote is that he was a dentist with the military when he was younger... I know at least doctors in the 60/70s had to do a military stint- would make sense for dentists as well.
kansasgal71 04-25-2008, 04:07 PM I never thought about that Hula Girl. That would make alot of sense, especially with all the military connections.
Starr Fish 04-25-2008, 06:24 PM Everybody likes Bernard. He's the only tailie we have left. He's a survivor and a fighter and a genuinely nice guy, who apparently knows M-code. Way to go Bernie.
MysteryFan 04-26-2008, 03:38 AM Daniel always seemed like an honest guy, the one who gave straight answers even though Charlotte tried to stop him. He seemed like a nice guy who was a pawn in Widmore's scheme. But when Bernard called him a liar, Faraday's integrity tanked. Daniel was incredulous that our favorite dentist could translate the message.
And thanks to Bernard, they now know that Ben was right - these Freighties never were going to rescue them.

It seemed like to me my feeling of Miles and Daniel switched in this episode. I thought Miles was the sleazebag, selfish SOB but he was genuinely afraid of Keamy and didn't expect that a genocide would go down. Faraday seemed like the sweet, slightly awkward nerd, but he is revealed to be a toadying snivelling selfish liar. Jeremy Davies line deliverry of you know morse code and his facial expression were brilliant the sudden realization that he isn't as smart as he thought he was, it seemed to say, I should have seen this coming. Bernard proved that it is better to be smarter than you look than look smarter than you are(Daniel and Charlotte). And watch that entire scene again, Sam Anderson really is brilliant in it. His facial expression when Faraday is typing the message was a dim, slightly slackjawed expression and as soon as Jack asked him, it changed to steely determination, and like I've said slightly threatening. Faraday's reaction was the first time on the show someone has been scared and intimidated by Bernard. I liked the scene because with the exception of Jack keeling over it was one bright spot in a very grim episode. And no offense but did it really take you this long to realize the freighties had no intention of rescuing the losties?
Rosemary Bats 04-26-2008, 04:14 AM If I'm not as cool as Bernard when I start reaching that age, I will be sorely disappointed in myself (I'm already a crack shot with a rifle...I just need to learn morse code now, and I'll be on my way).
I love him. He's a lovable, friendly, exuberant dork who can kick butt when it's required.
I freakin' love Rose too, though. Don't be so hard on her, she's usually trying to look out for him with what she does, even if it comes off as overbearing.
MysteryFan 04-26-2008, 04:17 AM I think we ( including Jack and his followers) were all trusting Faraday a little too much; he's such a likeable character. Isn't Sun the only one who confronted him for a straight answer, and when he said nothing - she understood the truth?
Loved Bernard's expressions throughout the scene too. Did they show Charlotte's mouth drop? -- that would have been sweet. Maybe they did, but I was too busy enjoying Bernard's reaction to Faraday's dismay. Just a raised eyebrow - not even a smirk.
I hadn't thought about Miles, but I agree -- his reactions showed him to be more genuine than we've had reason to believe in the past. When they first arrived, it looked like Miles had all the secrets and answers. Now he's clamoring for James's protection from his own boat people.

Sun was the first to confront him and Sun is a smart cookie she didn't trust Daniel or Charlotte from the moment they stepped into camp. And Daniel's hesitation told her everything, too bad Jack didn't listen to her. But if you watch the scene Charlotte's reaction is better than Faraday's it's a split second but it's really shock that Bernard was smarter than her, shock that she didn't see it coming, then anger, followed by weariness, and fear.
donofthedead 04-26-2008, 05:18 AM Bernard is why lost is so awesome...here is a very small character (in comparison to the A-team characters) who steals every scene he appears in every time (as does Rose). I would love to see another Bernard/Rose episode but even without, the show works because of characters like Bernard.

He really is sort of the everyman extraordinary lies within the ordinary character. Who would've thought when he was introduced hanging from a tree, that 1. He would be the sole survivor of the tailies and 2. Play a key role in taking down the others.
kansasgal71 04-26-2008, 02:34 PM Bernard is always so cool headed when everyone else is freaking about something. I love the character, but I have always felt there is something more to him. The look that Charlotte and Daniel had almost made me feel like they were afraid of Bernard because of his knowledge. I wonder if they know something about him that we don't?
